One thing I am very passionate about is incorporating relevant and engaging technology tools into my classroom. I use the word 'tools' on purpose in this category, as I am not a computing teacher. I don't teach technology; rather, I use technology as a tool to teach music.
(as stolen straight from the google machine) tool tuːl/ noun
So, in the context of music education, I use technology as an aid to assist my students in the learning of music. Technology also makes things easier, and when teaching children, fun makes learning easier. Last year, I ran a massive competition with Name that Note ( http://www.musicteachers.co.uk/namethatnote/), in which I challenged the students to beat their best score each week, and if they were really good, beat me. I said that if my students could read music quicker and more accurately than I could, that I will have succeeded in teaching note placement on the stave. Essentially, it is a drill; the same as doing flash cards or filling out sheets and sheets of theory, but the use of technology makes the practice fun, and therefore is more effective. In addition to that, I was successful; Tyla C completely blitzed my highest high score on both bass and treble clef, and I couldn't have been prouder. :D For my classes, here are some websites that I use. Games: isleoftune.com incredibox.fr musicteachers.co.uk/namethatnote/ Scoring application: noteflight.com Apps for ipod/ipad Rhythm Cat Autorap (Actually, most things made by creators, Smule, are awesome, and all music related) Singing fingers (see an example on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCYA7N-vdZA ) Music Sharing Soundcloud Downloads: Try this website for some fabulous music downloads. Staff Wars is very cool and good site reading practise to boot. http://www.themusicinteractive.com/TMI/index.html That's a small sample of things I use in classes. Check them out, they are super amounts of fun, and you may learn something as well. :) I'm off to burn a HUNDRED (well, it feels like it) Fame rehearsal CDs, and continue scoring our junior classes self devised class anthems.
